The 1979 Synod of the Christian Reformed Church appointed a committee to prepare "a contemporary testimony in view of the secularization of modern life and culture." The Synod of 1986 gave final approval to Our World Belongs to God as "a testimony of faith for our times, subordinate to our creeds and confessions."
